SATURDAY, JULY 11 > 9:30am - 11pm

VR Hackathon NY begins! If you’re unable to make the Mega Meet-Up, do a late check-in with the VR Hackathon Team.
Please note: Bring PHOTO ID for NYU SECURITY.
Gear and space:
- Each team will receive one ViSR Cardboard.
- 10 Leap Motion VR development kits are available. Sign up for a Leap Motion kit by contacting us at [email protected]. First come, first serve. If you use the Leap Motion kit to create VR, you get to keep the kit!
- 8 Gear VR headsets/phones are available. Sign up for a slot to use the Gear VR and test your VR project. If you’re keen on having a Gear VR at your fingertips at all times, you can put a Samsung phone and headset on your credit card at the Samsung Studio on Friday night. When you return the gear, the Studio will refund your deposit.
- Three Oculus Rift DK2s are available. Again, there will be a sign-up sheet with time slots to test your VR.
Breakfast and dinner will be served. Expect the basics: bagels and pizza.
Be aware that doors do a hard close at 11pm. We will start calls to wrap up at 10pm. Because this is a university facility, this is not an overnight hackathon. There is no couch to sleep on. If you want to continue hacking, you’ll have to do it at home.
SUNDAY, JULY 12 > 9:30am - 8:30pm
Location: ITP/NYU, 721 Broadway, Floor 4, NYC 10003
Timing of Sunday events:
- 4:00pm – Hacking ends
- 4:00pm – 4:30pm – BREAK
- 4:30pm – 6:30pm – Presentations by hackathoners to judges
- 6:30pm – 7:30pm – Judges determine winners
- 7:30pm – 8:30pm – Announcement of winners and awards
Judging will be conducted via exhibition style. Judges will rotate among the teams and experience your VR project. Winners in the various categories will be determined by the judges and then announced.
Awards and Judging Criteria
Prizes to be determined are as follows:
- Best Heart Wrenching VR – sponsored by Fake Love
- Best Narrative VR – sponsored by EEVO
- Best VR Made with Unity – sponsored by Unity 3D
- Best "Wow-Factor" VR – sponsored by NYC Media Lab
- Best VR [TBA] – sponsored by Littlstar
The criteria for judging:
Originality of Concept (1-5)
Given that VR is an emerging new medium, the originality of your VR concept is turnkey. In concert with the theme of the hackathon, judges will also consider how the VR prototype or blueprint serves, innovates or enhances story/narrative.
Sweetness (1-5)
Hearkening back to the era of the Manhattan Project, scientists often termed beautiful and elegant solutions as technically "sweet." How elegant and compelling is the VR project from both an aesthetic and technical point of view? How "sweet" is your VR?
Relevance (1-5)
Because sponsors have designated prize categories, judges will evaluate projects according to the categories. Keep in mind that the categories relate to hackathon's theme. How relevant is your VR prototype to a particular prize category?
VR projects will be rated on a numerical scale – 1 lowest, 5 highest. Total high score wins the prize.
The VR Hackathon team encourages all hackers to play, imagine and invent. Have fun!
