TimeWave Festival An Interactive Playground, Autumn 2015

See highlights of the June 2013 TimeWave festival - an international theatre & technology event which gathered 40 actors, 18 writers, 17 directors and multimedia artists and streamed in new work from London, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Madrid and Montreal. Among TimeWave's supporters were Disney Imagineering, Hathersage Capital Management, Arts Council England, Telestream and Vidyo.

TimeWave knits the worlds of storytelling and technology, encouraging the cross-fertilization of two different cultures. While the 2013 festival explored telepresence as a way to gather storytellers from remote locales, TimeWave 2015 will focus on how different technologies can enhance storytelling if not lead to innovation of story form.

We envision TimeWave 2015 as an interactive playground that showcases emerging technologies in culture and entertainment. Potential components – theatre, music and gaming - may include:

I. The Playground - A space filled with VR/AR/IoT (virtual reality, augmented reality and Internet of Things) installations that users can experience in a free-flowing way. By focusing on the word "play" in playground, the idea is to invite users to interact with these pieces in a way that fires up their imagination.

II. Global Ghost Stories. The Presence Room connects three to five cities via telepresence, creating a global park in a room. While lollygagging on a London bench, meet denizens from Singapore, Berlin and New York City. Only one condition: if you sit on the bench, you have to tell a ghost story. The Room is a simple but powerful concept in which people can traverse time and space at leisure.

III. A version of 24-Hour Plays. In this overnight format artists race to write, direct and perform a new 10-minute play. In this rendition, we will give the writer, director and actors a “wearable” or new technology to use. The purpose: to capture the human response to the tech revolution. (Think C4's “Black Mirror” - only live.)

IV. The Grail Game is a Twitter game and on-the-ground treasure hunt which has players comb through Clerkenwell for the lost Grail. This game was successfully introduced in TimeWave 2013. It was also run in New York City with Masonic clues and locations. in 2015, we may expand the game to include augmented reality.

Dates and location will be announced in summer 2015. Please check this page for updates.
