1. What kind of hackathon is it?
What's the focus of the VR Hackathon - content/story or applications? Our answer: both. You can devote the weekend to developing either a rapid prototype of a VR application or a blueprint of a VR concept. A VR blueprint can even be a paper prototype of a great idea. Depending on your skill set, interests and where you are in your creative process, it's your choice of what you want to present at hackathon end.
2. What equipment will I have access to?
Some of our sponsors have contributed gear for VR Hackathoners. Leap Motion has provided its VR Developer Bundle for the Hackathon. If you develop a VR app with Leap Motion input technology, you get to keep the kit. Visit Hacker Tips for VR design pointers with Leap Motion.
At the very least, you'll have cardboard VR headsets to work with over the weekend. We may be bringing in more sophisticated headsets as well as a 360 3D camera rig. On this front, we'll have more information for you toward the end of June.
3. What software do I use?
We recommend that you download Unity 5 personal edition. It's free. To learn the software, Unity has provided tutorials, documentation and live training. Visit Learn with Unity.
4. How do I join a team?
Once you register, you will be sent a Slack invite. Please join Slack to meet other hackathoners, form teams and get feedback on your project. In addition, the Friday night Mega Meet Up has been set up for hackathoners to meet, mingle and form teams. During this time, you can either join a project of interest to you or introduce a project to other participants. We expect each team to consist of five to seven people. The VR Hackathon can accommodate 100 to 120 people.
5. Do we get API decks to work with?
Some of our sponsors will provide API decks. Currently, we have the Leap Motion API deck to distribute. Please access the Littlstar API by visiting the Littlstar Developer Portal and Content Guide.
6. How can I test my VR during the hackathon?
You can use the Littlstar platform to test your VR during the hackathon. Matt Collado, co-founder of Littlstar, will talk about the how-to's at the Friday July 10th Mega Meet Up. We will also post Littlstar how-to's on the VR Hackathon NY Slack site.
7. Can I work with remote team members?
To maintain a level playing field and in the interest of fairness to all hackathon participants, we can't allow participants to work with people who have not registered for the event as well as people who work remote.
