Dan Archer

Dan Archer

Award-winning journalist Dan Archer is exploring the intersection of immersive technology and journalism through Empathetic Media, a new media agency focusing on virtual and augmented reality. Archer was a 2014 Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow and a 2011 Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, where he also taught non-fiction graphic novel writing 2008-14. His work has been published by the BBC, CBC, Vice magazine, Fusion, San Francisco Public Press, American Public Media, Truthout and PBS among others and was featured in the BBC’s Future of News Report, which came out in January 2015. Ferguson Firsthand, the first VR experience from Empathetic, was published by Fusion in 2015 and has been featured by Wired, Killscreen, Mic, Ars Technica, Nieman Storylab and the BBC Future of News report. Arc, Empathetic’s first augmented reality app, will launch in November 2015 and features content from the Associated Press, United Nations, Columbia University’s Tow Center and the Washington Post.

Natalia Cabrera is a Chilean filmmaker and interactive media artist currently based in Brooklyn. Her previous work was focused on documentary and new-narrative genres, winning and showing her work at major film festivals around the world. Her interest for new ways of expression in the digital era brought her closer to interactive technologies, where she explores both the narrative and visual possibilities these tools provide. She’s currently a Master’s candidate at Interactive Telecommunication Program at NYU and a scholar of the Chilean Council of Science and Technology fund, CONICYT.

Inpyo Chang is a creative technologist and a designer who works in the fields of exhibition design and interactive media. His main interests are interactive composition and immersive multimedia. He holds a BFA degree in Visual Communications Design from Sung Kyun Kwan University in Seoul, South Korea and a master’s degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University

Eozin Che

Eozin Che

Eozin Che is a creative technologist and interactive installation artist. Her work spans multiple artistic platforms including interactive installation, live performance and 3D animated visualization.

Since 2005, Eozin Che has been engaged in a wide range of projects including architecture, art installation, advertisement, exhibition directing, and interactive arts. With a background in architecture, her projects are concerned with the construct of ‘space’ and the way it can be planned, experienced and conceptualized in an information age.

John Choi

John Choi

John Choi is a Creative Coder / Data Artist who tells stories by interpreting data in many different ways. He delights in unearthing key features regularly hidden in datasets, but which unlock stories that have yet to be told. He studied urban planning and Landscape Architecture and has master’s degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University.

Timothy Cooper

Timothy Cooper

Timothy Cooper is a filmmaker, playwright, and comedy writer based in Brooklyn, New York. He wrote and directed the web sitcom “Concierge: The Series” (ConciergeTheSeries.com), starring comedians from “Saturday Night Live,” “30 Rock,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Bridesmaids,” the Onion News Network, CollegeHumor, and Upright Citizens Brigade. The series was nominated for the first-ever WGA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Writing Original New Media.

His debut political comedy video, “Transparency,” was featured on the front pages of YouTube Comedy and Slate magazine. He also directed two shows that played at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City: the improvised play “Sunny-Side Up,” and “Farebeater: Improv in a Cab,” both starring cast members from “Silicon Valley,” “The League,” “Conan,” and more.

Timothy’s first feature-writing credit, “Away From Here,” starring Nick Stahl, Alicia Witt, and Ray Wise, was recently released on iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, and On Demand. He also wrote and directed the digital sitcom pilot “We Are Criminal Masterminds,” which was a nationwide top-five finalist in the Samsung Second Screen Storytellers Competition at the New York Television Festival. Timothy is the creator of 365 Loglines (365loglines.com), where he posted an original movie idea every day for a year.

He’s written commercials for dozens of high-profile brands, including five Super Bowl spots for YouTube itself, which filmed at Google’s New York headquarters. He was a contributing joke writer for host Colin Quinn at the 2014 Writers Guild Awards, and again for host Larry Wilmore at the 2015 Writers Guild Awards.

An in-demand creative consultant and script doctor, Timothy is currently developing multiple pilots and features with a wide range of producers and production companies.

Pierre Depaz is a political scientist who graduated from the NYU Game Center in 2015, and currently teaches there. He worked for international and local game developers, art galleries and museums before learning to code, which he is now using for freelance development of all sort of digital media, from games to websites and installations.

EunJee Kim

Eunjee Kim achieved her BFA in Graphic Design at the Rhode Island School of Design(RISD) in 2012. Upon graduating from RISD, she had the opportunity to work as a graphic designer for professionals and financial companies such as Barclays, Time Warner Cable Business Class, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Hirtle Callaghan, and Saint Francis College, to name a few, while working at branding firm in New York. She also had been designing and developing the identities for various start ups and organizations such as a mobile software service provider, CallGate inc., and the scientific organizations like Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in Switzerland, Korean-Scandinavian Scientists and Enginners Association, and The Society of Korean Scientists and Engineers in Finland. Now EunJee is enrolled as a graduate student at the New York University in Interactive Telecommunications Program.

Kristen Klemenhagen

Kristen Klemenhagen

Kristen Klemenhagen is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurobiology at Columbia University in New York. Her scientific research uses Unity3D to design custom virtual environments to explore differences in emotional behavior and learning in both healthy and mood disorder populations. Kristen is particularly interested in adding biological data and feedback into virtual research environments and games, and is currently working on integrating gesture detection and electroencephalogram (EEG) devices in to her virtual world research.

When she’s not working on collaborative projects, you can also find Kristen creating solo game demos for game jams or hackathons, reading and writing about science, or studying foreign languages.

Paul Hiam

Paul Hiam is a designer, developer and maker who is interested in storytelling and interactive experiences, especially around social issues. He is currently in the last year of his master’s degree at ITP where he has focused on creating playful immersive experiences and learning to practice human-centered design.

Paul graduated from Wesleyan University in CT and taught English in China through Princeton in Asia. Before ITP he worked in communications and as a designer for a number of NGO’s and social businesses. His favorite activities include rock-climbing, drawing comics, and playing blues and jazz guitar.
When he is not learning about cutting-edge technology and design at NYU, he works as a freelance web-developer.
KC Lathrop

KC Lathrop

KC Lathrop is a first year graduate student in NYU’s Interactive Telecommunication Program (ITP). Upon graduating with a B.A. in Spanish and English Linguistics, she has taught English as a Second Language to kids and adults in the States and abroad. While serving as an AmeriCorps Corps Member in 2011-2012, she became passionate about finding ways to make education more accessible, as well as unlocking ways to make learning a more interactive experience.

Through her studies at NYU and Samsung’s VR Lab, she is exploring ways to empower kids in and outside of the classroom. KC is interested in learning how VR can have a role in the future of education.

Chris Lobello

Chris Lobello

Chris LoBello is a Prototyping Engineer for Evolving Technologies Corporation. For the last 7 years he’s been either building, fixing or programing electronics and putting them into 3D prints of his own design. In 2013 he ran a successful Kickstarter for a product called the Makeraser. It was an incredible experience going from an idea in the middle of the night, to shipping out hundreds of Makerasers a few months later.

In 2014 he started working as a freelance prototyping engineer. One of his major contracts was with a FreeATM; where he designed, and assembled over 200 internet connected advertising displays which can be found throughout NYC.
His main focus is electronics prototyping. A recent project the VToe is a wireless game controller for VR, which uses an ergonomic pressure pad to control a player’s movement. Working in VR also allows me to work in Unity and connect my physical hardware devices to the virtual world.

Yuchi Ma

Yuchi Ma is currently a graduate student in ITP of NYU and has a background in industrial design and UX/UI. He is passionate about the applications of new tech combined with design and art.

In the VR lab, he is going to explore VR by using a glove as a controller to manipulate a shooting game by gesture detecting. He will also use sensors embedded in the gloves.

Gestures can be shooting, move&stop, maybe reloading and changing fire. Game details: enemies will surround, chase and hurt the user and there will be health bar  (e.g., better to have bullets bar and weapon options).

Dulphe Pinheiro Machado

Dulphe Pinheiro Machado

Dulphe Pinheiro Machado holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a Master’s Degree in Political Science. After graduating he began to work with photography taking jobs in the film industry. Pinheiro Machado recently showed his work in two solo exhibitions in Porto Alegre, and participated in collective shows in New York City, Portland and São Paulo. He has developed an interactive installation called “All things you didn’t know about yourself” for the artist residency at the Laboratory for New Media of the Image and Sound Museum of São Paulo, Brazil. He is currently enrolled at the Fine Arts/ Integrated Practices MFA at Pratt Institute, NY.

Francesco Marconi

Francesco Marconi

Francesco Marconi is a corporate strategist at the Associated Press, where he focuses on newsroom innovation. At AP, Marconi is responsible for collaborations with universities and startups to experiment and research new technologies that can power immersive storytelling. A Tow Fellow at Columbia University, Marconi has joined the Time Wave Lab to develop a deeper understanding of digital born VR content.

Francesco started his career at the United Nations researching innovation in developing countries which resulted in the publishing of his first book and and to speak at TEDx.

Sergio Mora-Díaz is an architect and artist born in Santiago de Chile, currently living in Brooklyn, New York. His work explores the communicative and interactive qualities of physical spaces, ranging from architecture and design to other related disciplines such as installation art, interactive technologies, motion graphics and performance art. Currently, Sergio is a M.P.S. Candidate at Interactive Telecommunications Program, New York University.

Isabel Paez

Isabel Paez is an Ecuadorian artist who studied Visual Arts for her Undergraduate degree where she published a book with her grandfather’s poetry and her illustrations and worked as an art director, video editor, a producer and a translator. Isabel now is living in NYC and is a graduate student in the Interactive Telecommunications Program where she is learning new ways to produce works of art with technology. She is interested in using technology to create experiences that persuade people to interact with each other and with public spaces. Isabel has showed her works in the NYC Media Lab of “Future Interfaces” and the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City. She has worked as an intern in the Met MediaLab and she was awarded with a grant to create a project about surveillance.

Tommy Payne

From a very young age Tommy Payne was encouraged to explore life through artistic mediums. Born in Perth, Western Australia she has traversed the globe looking to enact change through better design. She taught art to children living in Nepalese slums, contributed design work for social change incubator, YGAP, and has returned to school as a second-year MPS candidate in the Interactive Telecommunications Program, NYU Tisch. She completed a BA of Behavioral Science at the University of Notre Dame in Perth before moving to Melbourne where she graduated as the top student in her class at RMIT. She has spent the past few years working as an art director and recently interned at Apple on the iTunes team creating interactive musical experiences. Mixing technology with tangible, human elements are at the heart of her practice.

Craig Pickard is currently a second-year graduate student in NYU Tisch’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. He hails from the sunny shores of Cape Town, South Africa, where he completed a degree in Industrial Design. Subsequent to a brief role at an interaction design agency, he took on a diverse range of freelance projects before moving to New York.

Since beginning his exploration of new media and physical computing at ITP, he has grown fond of code as a medium for both creative and practical expression. His other interests and explorations include creative coding, interactive installations, hardware design, motion graphics, connected devices, non-traditional interfaces, and both virtual- and augmented-reality.

Rehmat Qadir works as an iOS developer by day and obsesses over Unity3D and VR development by night. He’s built two VR games so far using the Google Cardboard SDK and is a member of the new VR team at Carrot Creative in Brooklyn.

Jamie Ruddy graduated with highest honors from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts film program where she received the Outstanding Achievement in Screenwriting Award. Jamie has directed award-winning narrative short films, commercials and branded content. She was the showrunner of the docu-series, Living History with Mike Poutre, directed the feature documentary, How to Get Elected in America and authored the feature script, The Countess, for Universal Studios. Jamie is currently writing the screenplay for her narrative feature directorial debut, Bait, and is an M.P.S candidate at NYU ITP where she is focusing on Virtual Reality, UX design and other opportunities to marry storytelling with technology. Light as a Feather is her first virtual reality film.

Danara Sarioglu is an industrial engineer exploring the creative use of technology and fabrication techniques at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University. She holds a BSc in Manufacturing Systems and Industrial Engineering from Sabanci University, Turkey. Ziv Schneider

Ziv Schneider is a New York-based multimedia artist and designer. Her work combines old and the new and explores the use of experimental photography and virtual reality to narrate the past and raise questions about the future. It is focused on narratives around mystery, mortality and preservation, searching for new forms of storytelling and communication. Currently a research fellow at ITP and at The Economist Media Lab, where she is working on immersive editorial projects and her Museum of Stolen Art, a VR app to assist art recovery.

Cassie Tarakajian is a New York based technologist and artist from Hoboken, New Jersey. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland to study electrical engineering and music at Johns Hopkins University. Post college, she returned to New York and she worked in software development at the media and finance giant Bloomberg, and web development at the design agency of one of the cofounders of Vine, Big Human. She is currently a technology focused artist-in-residence at Pioneer Works, working in virtual reality, game development, and interactive storytelling.

I’m Jiashan Wu. Everyone calls me Jia, pronounciation: ja.

I’m a designer and creative technologist based in Brooklyn, NY. I explore ways to create experiences for people. Last year I enrolled as a graduate student in NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), where I’m learning and playing in classes with names like Always On Always Connected, Networked Sensors for Development, and Towers of Power. I’m a Partner and Community Manager at Dorm Room Fund, a student-run venture firm backed by First Round Capital. I’m working on an open source project, p5 Mobile, as part of Google Summer of Code.

Before ITP, I co-founded and managed XOlator, an interactive agency that designs and build web platforms, applications, and data visualizations. We worked with clients like Interior Design Magazine, Nike, and What’s Trending. I went to Parsons School of Design where I studied Communication Design. Once upon a time, I also shadowed makers and distributors of Shanzhai phones in Shenzhen, China for a year as a Fulbright scholar.

I use HTML/CSS and JavaScript a lot these days. Depending on the project, I also dabble with Node.js, Cordova, Swift, Arduino, and BLE sensors. Photoshop and Illustrator are my old friends, though I like to use new protyping tools as well as project management tools. http://fromjia.com/

Karolina Ziulkoski

Karolina Ziulkoski

Karolina Ziulkoski is new media artist from Porto Alegre, Brazil. She uses technological applications to create immersive experiences that allow for a deeper participatory exchange between stories and audiences. Many of her projects shape self-education through multimedia as a new instrument and strive to break the mold of the museum formula.

Ziulkoski holds an MPS from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications program and two Bachelor’s degrees, in Architecture and Advertising. She previously worked at the American Museum of Natural History, where she developed immersive interactive installations for the institution’s exhibitions, and is a founding partner at Bolota, an interactive design company in Brazil. Ziulkoski recently finished a residency at the Laboratory for New Media at the Museum of Image and Sound in São Paulo, and is currently a full-time member at New Inc., the New Museum’s incubator for art, technology and design.
