Set up your Android phone before you launch into Cardboard.

STEP 1: Download and install Java SE Development Kit (8 or higher)http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

Java SE

STEP 2 – Install Android SDK, including: SDK, platform and build tools
  • Make sure you download the Android 6.0 SDK platform and ARM EABI v7 System Img
  • Copy the path of the android-sdk when installing. You will need that path to input into Unity preferences so Unity can find the Android SDK on a build. See below:

Copy path of Android SDK for use in Unity

After downloading, start the Android SDK manager and install 5 packages:

  1. Android SDK Tools
  2. Android SDK Platform-tools
  3. Android SDK Build-tools
  4. SDK Platform – find under Android 6.0 (API 23)
  5. ARM EABI v7a System Image

STEP 3 – Install Unity 5.2 or higher

STEP 4 – Prepare your phone

1. Enable developer options on your phone:

  • For example, if you’re using a Samsung Galaxy S6:
  • Go to “Settings”
  • Go to “About Phone”
  • Tap on “Build” 7 times
  • Once you’ve enabled “Developer options,” click on it and enable USB debugging

STEP 5: Download and install your phone’s USB Driver for Windows

Note: Unity must find your phone to be able to push content into it, so these drivers are important.

For example, the Samsung Android USB Driver can be downloaded here: http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117

Quick Start – Android:

  1. Install Java SE
  2. Install Android SDK
  3. Install Unity 3D
  4. Prepare phone for developers
  5. Install USB drivers for Windows (for example Samsung Android USB driver)
